The options menu

The options menu is the floating panel in the classroom. Grab its header bar to move it wherever you like. Every setting takes effect immediately and is remembered between sessions. The ? button in the top-right corner opens these help pages.

Language

Which language you're learning. The list comes from your language config — switching changes the teacher's voice, personality, prompts, and the writing system on the board. The Difficulty and Test & Cards rows also follow the selected language: each language has its own difficulty levels and its own decks.

Difficulty

The level the teacher aims at — vocabulary, sentence complexity, and how much of the conversation stays in the target language. The choices are whatever the selected language's levels list contains (JLPT N5–N1 for Japanese, HSK for Chinese, or anything you define). Difficulty also shapes generated flash decks and quiz questions.

Speed

The teacher's speaking speed. 1 is natural pace; slide it down when you want more time to catch each word, up when you're comfortable. Applies to everything she says, including flash-card pronunciations.

Topic

Steers the conversation. Press the mic button, say a topic out loud ("ordering food", "travel", anything) and it's transcribed automatically when you stop speaking. The teacher works the topic into conversation, and Auto flash decks and quiz questions theme themselves around it too. Leave it empty for free conversation.

Test & Cards

Which flash-card deck is on the table — and, since the quiz draws its vocabulary from the active deck, which words the test covers:

  • (None) — no cards on the table.
  • Auto (AI) — a deck generated for your language, level, and current topic. Fresh words every deal.
  • Standard — a generated deck of core vocabulary for your level, ignoring the topic.
  • Your own decks — any deck you defined in your language config for the selected language, dealt exactly as written (all cards, in order). If the deck includes a hand-written quiz, the test uses those questions instead of generating any.

Account (Link / Unlink)

Connects the Meta Quest to your TalkBoard account. Press Link and the Meta Quest browser opens this site with your pairing code already filled in — log in, confirm, and the row flips to Linked a few seconds later. While linked, the app uses the API keys and language config from your account. Unlink disconnects the Meta Quest and returns the app to its built-in defaults; you can also revoke a Meta Quest's access remotely from the Devices page.
