Getting the app

The classroom isn't on the Meta Horizon Store yet — it's in private testing, so access is granted one person at a time.

To join, email support@talkboardvr.com and ask to be added as a test user. Include the email address on your Meta account: that's what the invitation is matched against, so an address you use anywhere else won't reach you. Meta also requires testers to be 18 or over.

Once you're added, Meta emails you an invitation. Accept it and the classroom shows up in your Meta Horizon library like any other app, ready to install from the Meta Quest — no sideloading and no developer mode. New builds then arrive automatically for as long as you're on the test channel.

Getting started

TalkBoard is the companion site for the VR language classroom. Your Meta Quest connects to your account here so it can use your API keys and your language settings — no keys are ever stored on the Meta Quest.

  1. Create an account, then open the confirmation link we email you. You can't log in until that address is confirmed, and the first message often lands in spam or junk.
  2. You don't need API keys to start — every new account gets a free trial. Add your own keys on the API keys page whenever you're ready to carry on past it.
  3. On the Meta Quest, open the options menu and press Link. A browser window opens over the classroom with your pairing code already filled in — confirm it, then press Done to drop back into the room.
Always sign in the same way. When the pairing page asks you to log in, use the same account you set your keys up on. Choosing Log in with Meta when you originally registered with an email address — or the reverse — quietly creates a second, separate account. Your keys, language settings and trial all stay on the first one, so the classroom behaves as though they vanished. Meta never shares your email address with us, so there's no way for the site to spot that the two accounts are the same person.

Playing in a browser

No Meta Quest? The classroom also runs in a normal browser at /play, already signed in and with nothing to link. Playing in a browser covers the controls.

The free trial

So you can try the classroom before signing up with an AI provider of your own, every new account gets an allowance on us — a few sessions' worth of conversation and speech. The API keys page shows how much of it you've used so far.

Two things to know about it. The allowance is one-time: it doesn't refill daily or monthly. And it only covers providers you haven't saved a key for — the moment you add your own key, requests use that instead and stop drawing on the trial. When the trial does run out the teacher goes quiet and the board tells you why; adding your own keys picks things up exactly where you left off, with nothing lost.

In the classroom

  • Talking: hold the push-to-talk button on your controller, speak, and release. The teacher listens, replies out loud, and the conversation appears on the board.
  • Options menu: choose your language, difficulty level, chat provider, conversation topic, and flash-card deck — detailed guide.
  • Flash cards: pick a deck to deal a stack of cards. Grab a card and flip it and hear the word pronounced. Decks marked Auto are generated for your level; hand-made decks come from your language config.
  • Quiz: poke the quiz paper and answer by pointing at an option. Questions use the words from your selected deck. The help icon on a wrong answer explains the correct one.
  • Pronunciation: being misheard at first is normal — see the pronunciation tips for how to get understood and where to learn the sounds.

Customizing languages and decks

The Language config page holds your personal copy of the app's configuration: which languages appear in the menu, the teacher's voice and prompts for each, difficulty levels, and your own flash-card decks (each deck belongs to one language and can optionally include a hand-written quiz). The Meta Quest downloads your config when the app launches. Invalid edits are rejected with a message telling you what to fix, and Reset to default always gets you back to a working config. Troubleshooting

  • The teacher keeps mishearing you: speak somewhere as quiet as you can. The recognizer picks up a television, a fan or someone talking nearby and tries to make words out of them, and in a language you're still learning it has no way to tell that what it heard wasn't what you meant. Shutting a door or turning off background noise usually does more than repeating yourself. Pronunciation tips covers the rest — giving short words some context, and asking the teacher to say a phrase first so you have something to copy.
  • "Add your key at talkboardvr.com": the provider selected for the current language has no key on your API keys page, and there's no trial left to fall back on.
  • "Your free trial is used up": add your own API keys on the API keys page. The allowance is one-time and doesn't reset, so this is the point where you sign up with an AI provider of your own.
  • Your keys or settings seem to have vanished: you're almost certainly signed in to a second account — see the warning further up. Log out here, sign back in the way you first registered, then Unlink and link the Meta Quest again.
  • Pressing Link opens the browser on the wrong page: close the Meta Quest browser and press Link again. Your code and the web address are also shown in the options menu, so you can always type them in yourself.
  • Teacher doesn't speak / doesn't hear you: check that your ElevenLabs key is saved and valid (use Test on the API keys page).
  • Config changes don't show up: the Meta Quest downloads the config at app launch — quit and reopen the app.
  • Lost or sold your Meta Quest: revoke its access on the Devices page; the device token stops working immediately.
